Gatton (population approximately 7,000) is located in the Lockyer Valley Regional Council area situated less than an hours drive west of Brisbane and 30* minutes from Toowoomba. It is the largest town and business centre of the Lockyer Valley.
The population of the Lockyer Valley grew from 53,340 in 2008 to 60,934 in 2013 (based on information released in December 2014 by the Queensland Government). This represents an annual growth rate of 2.7% which is above the state wide growth of just 2% for the same period. It is anticipated such growth will continue and be aided by Gatton’s close proximity to Toowoomba where major infrastructure projects such as the Wellcamp Airport and construction of the Toowoomba second range crossing will benefit the broader region.
The local economy is based on rural industries, primarily intensive horticulture, and forms part of the “Salad Bowl” of the Lockyer Valley. There is also significant beef and dairy cattle. The University of Queensland Gatton Campus is located at Lawes, just to the East of the town of Gatton, and with over 1800* students is a driver of significant student accommodation demand.
